The series of “Numbers and the News” workshops kicked off on Thursday, 28th April with senior editors from various media houses at the ACME training centre in Bunga.

 

The training attracted more than 20 editors from newspapers, radio and Television stations.


These included Daily Monitor, New Vision, The Independent Magazine, The Razor Publication and  The Observer.  Editors from the following radio stations also attended:  CBS FM, Radio West (Mbarara), KFM, Mega FM (Gulu), Voice of Teso (Soroti), Radio Paidha (Arua). Others included NTV Uganda and UBC TV.

 

Also, on May 31, journalists and junior editors from the same media houses and others also received the training.

 

During the workshop, the two groups were taken through the basic maths and statistical concepts like mean, median, mode, ratio, percentages, fractions, and decimals. Other areas that were covered included conceptualising stories based on numbers, using tables, charts and graphics to write about numbers.

 

Mr. Paul Busharizi, Business Editor, The New Vision was one of the failitators of the workshops. Mr Robert Sentamu of Wilsken Agencies, who conduct the Afrobarometer surveys took the journalists through the various principles of statistics on May 31.


ACME in conjunction with PRB will conduct two more of such trainings in June and July.
